This past week:
- Ten more books delivered to bookstores in tornado weather. Already had one bookstore notify me that they sold two copies and would like two more. I am glad, but with the price of gas and dealing with traffic, this whole self-distributor thing sucks. Two books at a time and they won’t buy more in bulk. (One store buys four.)
- Mailed off Goodreads Giveaway copies to United Kingdom and Canada…$72.60 to send registered so I can track both for delivery. That’s a lot of money to simply give away. Plus the Amazon Gift Certificates…geez…there went all the promo money earned. Do you ever really do more than break even?
- Decided writing a book is more fun than marketing or selling/distributing books.
- Cleaned house. Sprayed weeds. Still don’t have pool chemicals balanced.
- About the tweets. Learned to check analytic stats. I thought the tweets were selling books, but NOT ONE of my book tweets has been clicked through via the URL. I guess they are selling WOM from others who bought through promo and such. Of course, that has almost come to halt. Selling one or two every day or two.
- Also, about tweeting: It says in my profile that I am a supporter of liberal causes. What do people think that means? They follow me, then, on those days when I mention anything about abortion, prochoice, or gay rights…on those days…I get unfollowed. As many as 4-10 unfollows in one day. Granted, 4-6 will follow on those days. I am also followed by a lot of bail bondsmen. Not sure what that means. People are weird.
- I participated in my first Meal Train. That was fun. Young lady in a third floor apartment that had a C-section. Beautiful baby girl.
- Had grandkids and daughter over for a day. My grandson hates me. Screams almost every time I touch him, unless his mom is right there. Major separation anxiety!
This week:
- It took me from April 2012 through July 2012 to write the first draft of Red Clay and Roses. I was totally dedicated to it and did not have a blog or any marketing going on. I was not working at all outside the home. I don’t watch TV or much of anything else…like playing games. I have got to get focused on my writing if I want to produce anything else.
- Next point: I have a post that I am planning for tomorrow…beyond that; I am seriously contemplating an extended social media hiatus. A few weeks without blogging unless something just must be put out there. Occasionally reading when I need a break from writing. No every day comments…just lurking around from time to time. I know it sounds selfish. You guys are my world. I don’t work outside the home much, but I have some wellness screenings to do around the end of March. I consider YOU my coworkers and will miss you sorely. I hope you will all be here when I get back. I am afraid if I don’t commit to my writing much deeper than I have…this project will take much longer than I hoped. I wish I was as good of a multi-tasker as I was when I was nursing full-time, but I am not. I want to get done with this first draft and I am terribly distracted.
- I will still do any promo pieces I am planning.
- I have forty books on my reader, and 20 more that I want to purchase. I want to get more reading done, so I will post a book review from time to time.
- I have a major art fair coming up in April. I have got to finish my jewelry pieces.
- Also, with the time change…my gardening and yard work demand so much attention…okay, so much for excuses.
- It is too bad that social media is such a time drain. After a few weeks, I will revisit my writing progress, and see how much social media I can resume. I don’t have a clue how you guys can turn out book after book, work full time jobs, manage a family and all at the same time. I think you are amazing and I applaud you! I am far from lazy. I stay immensely busy. I have to blame it on old age creeping up on me. My brain does not hold or process information like it once did.
- Now that I have told you that I plan to abandon you, may I ask if I can call on you from time to time? I am certain that I will need to.
Your readers will be here only… as I will be. So, don’t worry.. and go finish your first draft. All the best. 🙂

“About the tweets. Learned to check analytic stats”—This is possible?! As always, I’m a laggard in what’s out there…
We all need a social media break now and then. I do summer blog breaks and no longer feel guilty about it. Or at least I did last summer. We all need to refuel from time to time.

Refuel is a nice way to think about it. It’s what i need…to recharge my batteries.
The little gear wheel will show you all of your analytic stats on twitter, any URLs clicked through, lots of charts and graphs about follows, unfollows etc…I am not a big stats junky, but happened to run across it.
LikeLike
Hmm, I can’t seem to find it on my gear wheel. Are you using the actual Twitter site or a Twitter app like Tweetdeck?
LikeLike
Just Twitter. At the top right corner of your home page, there is a round gear wheel like on FB. Click on that and the word analytics come up in the drop down menu, click on that and you get a whole world of stats.

Analytics isn’t one of my choices. Weird. Maybe I need to enable it or something. I’ll play around. Thanks!

I googled it and found it. I just can’t seem to access it from my gear shift. But that’s okay. At least now I know about it. I saved the analytics page for future reference. Thanks!

My pleasure…don’t know what i did to get it on the menu. I went to “help” at one time to figure something out.

Sweet little grandson! You are entitled to a hiatus. Blogs are high-maintenance and I post generally only twice weekly. We’ll be hear when you get back! When you need a break, there’s always “plain and fancy” — ha!

Thanks Marian…I’ll be checking in from time to time.

But we were all getting along so well. I completely understand. Writing the first draft is the fun part. After that it becomes work. I noticed you’ve been somewhat absent lately. Do what you need to do. We’ll all be here when you get back. I’m off to light both ends of my candle right now. Say hi when you get the chance.

I am lurking from time to time to read. We will see how this goes. When I sign on, I read a ton of mail. I need to separate myself from that for a while. Not sign on, and get some writing done…seems I have a hard time doing both.

Me too. I have this thing about being a good blog citizen. Here I am now, in fact. I’ve almost given up on Twitter, and I’ve been there for about four years.

I have my WIP in Scrivener. For a while, that’s all I need to go to, even if mail piles up or I have to delete some. I have got to focus.

You’ve made me smile. You are so busy. How do you get any writing done? When I come back from my vacation and after being unplugged for almost a month, I hope to make changes and go back to my novel and other writing as well. I feel the same as you. Love my friends here but social media is a time-stealing monster. 😀 I don’t think you should feel bad because you want to accomplish what you’ve planned. I know you still do at least that’s how it is for me. 🙂

I totally understand the need for a blogging break – it’s just so much work (albeit enjoyable) and there is always so much else to be done (also enjoyable).I’m soo behind on my reading list as well – and it’s not good to be trying to write without getting any reading in at all! I’ll be here when you get back in any event. Talk anon.

I feel your pain … there comes a point at which you need to finish the WIP. Go get it done. Social media will still be here when you get back.
As for your grandson, imagine being the little kid’s father while he is going through his mommy only phase. I had that with both of my boys. 🙂

I know, poor guy. He talks about that. Says his son screams the whole time mom is at the store whether he is holding him or not. Not so sure this “attachment bonding” thing is worth the drama.

Mine weren’t quite that bad, but there was a period of time with each of them where if both of us were available, the first and only choice was mommy. I’d try to give her a break and the little rug rats would have none of that.

Of course we’ll still be here. Write away. And don’t talk to me about Twitter and the weirdness of certain followers!

LOL! I see you there a lot. You have so many followers.

It’s taken me years to build up those followers! And I’m only able to sustain any kind of interaction by using a very useful tool – roundteam.com – that automatically tweets from my subject lists. And I’m still not sure if there’s any correlation between Twitter and sales!

I schedule social media including my blog to morning coffee time and sometimes during my paycheck job lunch break. What I get done in those two hours is it. I do not post daily anymore. I do a status update every Monday, share some links, and try to type up something worthy of reading.
I always squeeze in reading. It goes everywhere with me. My critique reads are cutting in to my luxury reading time though.
I won’t be walking away from this, but I do plan on being a little less available. My laptop is not connected to the internet for a reason 🙂 Good luck with your to do list!

On tweeting – I think its weird because I can’t quite figure it out! On slowing down on social media – I’ve had the same thoughts and am very undecided just what to do. On getting old – I’m right there with you. I do not retain as much as I used to and can’t multi-task as well! So believe me, you’re not alone! I’ll be here when you come back if you’ll be here if and when I do! LOL!

It sounds like you’ve been very busy! Social media takes so much time. That’s one reason why I haven’t tried Twitter. I just joined a work-social media site on Yammer, but I don’t really want to. 🙂 I only manage about one blog post a week, and don’t have that much time to read and comment on others. . .Good luck with your writing! Yes, it takes time. I need to get to work now, too–after I go to the gym! Haha.
